Shown in this cross-section: large solar aperture on the south side (left) with narrow light and ventilation source on the north (right); clerestory that serves as heat-gathering chamber as well as natural light source for north parts of house; balcony design for second floor permits freer flow of air and light throughout the structure and, by elevating the north balcony above the south, enhances day lighting for first floor (notice old-fashioned barn-style oak joists supporting the balcony); below the first floor, over-size ducts permit easy circulation of heated air drawn down from the clerestory, warming and drying these low-down and hence naturally damp areas before rising through open registers to flush with warmth concrete walls and other structures with mass sufficient to absorb 1,000,000 btu's of heat while raising the temperature only one degree. (This sketch still shows the greenhouse with a sloped face.)
